There’s plenty to do close by the B&B, whether you’re looking for a great meal, learning a new skill at the Ely Folk School, a round of golf or taking in one of our amazing local art festivals! Here’s a lineup of local and Northern Comfort events over the next few months.

Open Knitting at Sisu Designs Yarn Shop

Every Saturday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm

From the website: This is your time to come and hang out with other knitters (and crocheters). Enjoy a cup of tea, good conversation, get inspired by other knitter’s projects etc. It’s not a good time to come and get major help with a project since it is usually a full house. (no need to sign up for this class since the shop is open and we are here.)

Ely Farmers Market & Artists Market

Begins Tuesday, May 30th | 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Tuesday nights, Ely is the place to be! Not only is there a great artist and farmers market in the park, but many of the local merchants stay open late and there’s usually music on the porch at Front Porch Coffee!

 

Tower Farmers Market

Begins Friday, June 2nd | 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Location: Tower Mini-Park (near the train)
20 minutes from the B&B

This small weekly market is a fun place to visit on Friday afternoons! Local makers and growers set up in the parking lot near the Tower Civic Center and offer a variety or items from fresh veggies and flowers to handmade soaps and local, organic raised beef and pork. Definitely worth a visit!

Introduction to Spinning

From the website: Here’s a chance to try spinning on a wheel before buying your own. You will learn how to turn wool fiber into yarn with the use of a spinning wheel. We will even play with hand spindles, wool prep and yarn finishing. There will be several wheels available for spinning and if you have a working wheel bring it along. You will leave class with your own hand spindle, wool fiber and your own newly spun yarn. Three-day class.

Working for Wolves

From the website: Spend a weekend “Working for Wolves” assisting the wolf care staff with some very specialized projects that benefit the ambassador wolves. The fall sessions typically involve summer tree branch removal and preparation for winter.

7th Annual City Wide Rummage & Business Crazy Day Sale

Beginning Pine Needle Basketry

From the website: Pine needle art is among the oldest crafts known and pre-dates pottery. For over 9,000 years, Native Americans have made such baskets for storing food & supplies. Although baskets can be made from a variety of materials, including sweet grass & raffia, among the most beautiful are from pine needles. You’ll learn how to weave a small basket using long leaf pine needles. We will discuss how to gather & prepare your own red pine needles from the lakes and woods around Ely. And you’ll take home your own woven pine needle basket.

From the website: Learn how to make the renowned pastry associated with Ely’s Slovenian heritage. You’ll make the dough, learn how to roll it just right, then create and add the walnut filling, and bake to take home your own delicious potica. Enjoy learning from Mary Louise Icenhour in our brand new teaching kitchen from her mother’s recipe (Rose Mavetz). Bring your own rolling pin. Mary will provide all the ingredients.

Learn to Make Your Own Pasties

From the website: Perhaps no traditional food is more closely associated with the Iron Range than pasties (pronounced “past-tees”). Brought here by Cornish miners, these hearty and healthy lunch pies are created from chopped fresh veggies (carrots, potatoes, onions, rutabagas), and meat (beef and pork), sealed and baked in delectable pastry shells.

Ely’s mining families appreciated how well they transported and held their heat in a lunch bucket and you’ll enjoy their great taste! In this class, you will learn how to prepare the filling, and how to roll and crimp the dough. You’ll take home a freshly-made pasty to bake and the skills to make more on your own!

Spring Edibles

From the website: Spring is a great time for wild salads – nutritious and delicious greens and flower parts abound. There are also fiddlehead ferns and marsh marigolds for cooked vegetables. In this class we’ll go hunting for these wild foods, learn about some others that aren’t yet ready for harvesting, and return to the school to cook up a small snack. Dress appropriately as we’ll go out rain or shine (but not lightning), and may get our feet wet.

Soudan Underground Mine Opens for the Season

Memorial Day Weekend

From the website: Experience the life of the miner as you travel by cage 1/2 mile underground. Once underground, you’ll ride the rails 3/4 mile to the last and deepest area that was mined. You’ll learn firsthand why this mine was called the “Cadillac of Mines,” and gain insight into the working conditions of the miners and their remarkable mining methods.

Wolf Family Rendezvous

With plenty of family-focused activities and outdoor fun, your family will talk about this trip for years to come! Blast from the Past Car Show and Swap Meet

From the website: The Shifters Car Club presents the Blast from the Past Car Show at North Hibbing. A boys and girls bike (for age 12 and under) will be given away. No admission fee, but lots of cool cars to see!

 

Dirty Ores Roller Derby

June 10 | Doors at 6 p.m.

Learn to Knit a Norwegian Style Sweater

From the website: Do you admire the beautiful sweaters from Scandinavia? Now you can learn to make your own! You’ll knit a doll size sweater to learn the techniques of two-color knitting using steeks (small bridges of knitted stitches added to the main pattern), allowing you to knit continuously in the round, which is easier than switching to purling every other row. You cut the steeks to shape your sweater and finish the cut edges. Steeks can be used to create armholes, neck openings, pockets, or cardigan fronts as well as to knit blankets in the round. This class is suitable for advanced beginner knitters and above.

Land of the Loon Arts & Crafts Festival

From the website: Kick off the weekend with a grand parade in Virginia then walk over to historic Olcott Park. Find it lined with vendors from around the Midwest, selling crafts and art of all types. Food vendors dish up your favorite bites, and entertainers keep everything lively. Visit the Iron Range’s largest arts and craft fair this June.

 

Dirty Ores Roller Derby

From the website: Northeast Minnesota is a world hotspot for the number of orchid species growing in a limited area. Within just a few miles of Ely approximately 31 species can be found. Join us on a two-day journey exploring how to photograph these beauties. You can take class both days or either day.

Pups at One Year

From the website: Relive the past year of our newest ambassador wolves—Axel and Grayson—and see the adult wolves they are becoming. This is a great way for 2016 Pup Care Participants to get together and reminisce about the many hours of pup care that contributed to the socialization of our 2016 pups. Even if you weren’t a pup care participant in 2016, you are welcome to attend and see how the pups have matured.

Summer Solstice Kantele Workshop

From the website: Come and celebrate Juhannus–Finnish Midsummer! And learn to play the five-string kantele, Finland’s uniquely beautiful Baltic harp.

Diane Jarvi will demonstrate and do a short workshop on the kantele, the Finnish version of an instrument known throughout the world as either a zither or lap harp. The original kantele had only five strings and was used to accompany the singing of traditional Finnish runes and stories, many from the Kalevala, Finland’s mythological folk epic. In the Kalevala it is said that a sage by the name of Väinämöinen made one of these instruments using the wood of a weeping birch and strung it with hair from a young maiden. Kanteles can have up to 36 strings, but Diane will have 5-string kanteles for people to try out. Open to all ages.

Dorothy Day

Admission is free all day and tour guides will be on-hand to share Dorothy’s unique story. An activity station will feature a take-home craft that is easy to make for all ages and abilities. Learn to Make Apple Strudel

From the website: Apple strudel is a classic dessert of Eastern Europe that’s savored by many Ely area residents. The word strudel refers to the effect of rolling up of a generous fruit filling in a paper-thin unleavened crust. Learn how to mix, knead, and pull genuine strudel dough the old fashioned way! Sure, store-bought phyllo dough offers a quick short cut, but handcrafted dough results in a delicate and buttery pastry – the real deal.

After pulling the dough, we will fold it with grated or sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and butter and then bake to perfection. Each student will take home a generous piece. Dessert is served!
